Earth Science

15. Relevance of content to question

Jump to tasks

Relevance simply means that the information, examples, references and argument embedded in your essay must directly relate to the essay title, either answering specific questions or broadening specific areas of discussion. Use the information to illustrate and strengthen the point you are trying to make.

It's important to be clear about relevance because irrelevance guarantees poor marks. Luckily, keeping your essay relevant is easy: just keep asking yourself two key questions:

1. Does this piece of information/quote/reference/example/argument relate directly to the essay title?

2. Does this piece of information/quote/reference/example/argument add weight to my response?

Earth Science students have a terrible habit of shortening their essay titles so that, for example: Provide a general discussion on palaeoecology, including that of three of the fossil groups you have studied - is shortened to Palaeoecology, adaptations of fossil invertebrates to life in the sea; or down to Adaptations of fossil invertebrates to life in the sea; or down to no title at all.

Keep the essay title - by that I mean the WHOLE essay title - by you when you are researching and writing. If you do not, you may well wander off the subject and do either unnecessary work or entirely the wrong work.
