20. Structure - summary and conclusions
The summary and conclusion, i.e. the last part, of your essay, is the place for drawing the strands of your essay together and rounding it off. How you do this depends largely on the title of your assignment. The conclusion of a discussion will briefly refer to the topics discussed in the paper, and then bring them all together.
Example:
Essay title: Discuss the processes that deform continental crust and where such deformation might be found.
Conclusion: To conclude, deformation of continental crust occurs at the plate boundary, of which there are three types: spreading centres; subduction zones; and transform-fault boundaries. The process of deformation is steady and, where continental crust is not rigid, folding occurs. As has been shown, the results are some of the world's most curious sights, and knowing how the deformation occurs only adds to their interest.
The conclusion of an argument will briefly refer to the points (and counter-points) made, and then come down on one side or the other.
Example:
Essay title: Why do almost all geologists believe in Darwin's theory of evolution?
Conclusion: Though this essay has sifted through the major religious, scientific and practical arguments that have been lodged against Darwin's theory of evolution, one fact remains: nobody has yet conclusively falsified his theory. That Darwin himself, through discussion and debate, tested his own theory almost to destruction, and that it has been under constant attack, have only validated it further. As seekers after scientific truth, geologists, nearly all of whom would like to see their own name attached to a theory, would be only too quick to dethrone Darwin if their researches rendered his theory obsolete. This has not happened, and until it does - if it ever does - for geologists, as for others, Darwin's theory will stand.
